If you have seen this intro go directly to I-Map!.

Darwin-FIRST i-Maps, in this case a Human Knowledge Map, will look like the figure above. Each discipline is mapped onto a 6x6 matrix, in this case the ICT, Information, Computing and Telecommunications discipline, chosen as a Prototype.

Cognitive Objects are retrieved by pairs [k, s] keyword, subject, or if you prefer by "keyword acceptation". You may check nearly 50,000 of them for this prototype and nearly 8 million for a whole Human Knowledge Map.

Main Search

Regular Query Outcome: When queried by a pair the i-map delivers regularly from 1 to 6 "abstracts" of Authorities and Hubs that allegedly satisfy it. These cognitive units titled as i-URL's, abstract Websites in full not only their homes.

Extension I Outcome (see Similar Search Help. Link needs to be activated by a real query): FIRST will provide you with up to 10 documents similar to the i-URL you are inspecting with their "similarity" based on a similar keyword pattern. These similar documents were retrieved by one of FIRST's agents from a pool of Search Engines using Random Walk Techniques.

Extension II Outcome (see Extended Search Help. Link needs to be activated by a real query): For each pair FIRST will provide you with the Top 10, 20, 30 and more, retrieved from a Pool of Search Engines by another special procurement agent. Its mission is carefully customized and tuned up for each subject and you are allowed to fix it up too!. You may access by this feature nearly 1 million of "reasonably good" documents for this prototype and more than 100 million for the whole map once finished.

Compare: FIRST allows its users to compare its outcomes with the ones resulting from using major Search Engines. See Compare Help. Link needs to be activated by a real query.

Note: The agent does not limit its action to retrieve and merge Top documents but to ponder them by a complex set of preferences and priorities oriented to retrieve sometimes hidden authoritativeness.

Note: Users may ponder how much the second component of the search - the subject - reduces its uncertainty: sometimes more than 1,000 times!.

Direct Search

Darwin-FIRST allows its users to search directly as in conventional Search Engines instead of navigate through subjects as above. If user knows the pair he/she will be pointed to the regular outcomes. However if he/she is in doubt, FIRST has a "wild card" option: only the keyword is defined. In this case, if the keyword was correctly spelled, FIRST presents to him/her all the acceptations registered.

Logical Tree: user may inspect the logical structure of i-maps.

Thesaurus: user may inspect the whole Thesaurus, subject by subject and even go deep inside its inner structure, for instance the meaning of "core keywords" and "keywords affinities" concerning search efficiency.

Glossary: For each discipline Darwin-FIRST will enable a specialized Glossary. For this prototype we offer the best choice in the Web, the old classic Foldoc, from which users may learn precise definitions of nearly 18,000 terms.

Dictionary: For each language a Dictionary. Merrian-Webster is selected for English, and the REA, Real Academia Española, for Spanish.

Random Search: FIRST provides its users "Cognitive Bargains". This resembles the "on sale" of shopping stores. Sometimes "good articles" are not selected because their existence is ignored.

PAG's: Stands for PotentialAffinity Groups, Users that share search affinities. Through them users will improve their search abilities.

Bank of Images: Images and their affinities with pairs (k, s) will suggest new frontiers of search.

Warning: All of these resources are within the "realm" of Darwin-FIRST, even the Extended I and II options. I-Maps are essentially evolutionary. FIRST "learns" from users and evolves continuously in its content and even in its inner structure, Thesaurus and Logical Tree. The actual content of this ICT Prototype as of August 1st 2003 could be considered the first approach as an ICT Cognitive Offer. Its improvement will depended of how users use it!.
